Simplicity you can rely on: How Kumšta & Partners uses DirectCase

"We see a huge difference compared with the tools we used before. You can rely on the relevance of the sources found, and at the same time the results come in a form that makes follow-up work much easier."

— Pavel Kumšta, firm owner

About Kumšta & Partners

Kumšta & Partners is a law firm in Tábor. They cover a broad range of legal practice: commercial and corporate law, insolvency, and criminal matters. In a small team, everyone does research — there is no one to delegate to. Every hour counts, and every tool has to work from day one.

The opportunity

Like most firms, they worked with traditional legal databases in their research. It was a slow way of working that held the firm back in practice. Especially in situations where they needed to go deep and quickly cover legislation, case law, and interpretation on a single topic.

They saw AI as an opportunity for change years ago. They had added language models to everyday tools for simpler tasks, such as polishing template texts or adjusting ready-made contract templates. The team even experimented on their own with integrating some models with their own database of case law and statutes.

Still, what was missing was the link between verified (and updated) sources and the performance of AI models. They did not want AI as a mere add-on to cumbersome databases. But fast AI models still did not have verified sources and were not sufficient for deeper research. The key question was trust: to what extent can they trust the results?

The solution

DirectCase combined what traditional databases and general models together could not: verified and updated legal sources in an environment where you just type the question and get to work. DirectCase became the primary means of consulting the sources.

The lawyers have at hand a tool that works not as a supplement to search, but as the starting point of work. The split by client and topic allows them to pick up a work-in-progress case seamlessly; context can be added as a document. No unnecessary steps, no switching between systems.

"The environment has no unnecessary steps. I don't have to hunt for features — I just write what I need. It's like having a colleague next to me to consult."

— Pavel Kumšta

The model works exclusively with verified statutes and case law. Every output contains a specific citation where you can see the original wording.

Impact

  • Efficiency: 12 hours saved per lawyer per month
  • Adoption: 100% of research starts in DirectCase
  • Workflow: Primary tool for legal research

Confidence and mental relief

The greatest added value is mental relief: the confidence that relevant sources have been found and that the citations are in order. Firm management cannot always check every output; it is therefore essential that colleagues start with well-grounded research from the very first step.

Substantial time savings compared with traditional databases

Results come quickly and in a form that can be plugged directly into the text being drafted — for instance, a submission to court. Ultimately the clients benefit — preparing a case becomes less costly.

Simpler terms

Getting started with the system took, in practice, five minutes to create an account. The business terms are simple too: a clear subscription amount, no complicated credits or top-ups, no paywalls in the middle of work, no contractual lock-in.

The future

Kumšta & Partners tried a range of approaches: traditional databases, general models, and their own integration. For legal research, they are sticking with DirectCase. As Pavel Kumšta put it: "DirectCase matched our idea of AI that flexibly fits into everyday work. And I am convinced this is the path for other firms of our size as well."
